Thanks to breakthroughs in data science and artificial intelligence—such as speech recognition and automated decision-making—our lives are increasingly being controlled by algorithms. But this progress also brings serious challenges, such as questions about privacy, human rights, inequality of opportunity, diversity, and the spread of misinformation.
The aim of investments in the theme of Humane Artificial Intelligence & the Data-Driven Society is to utilize insights from the humanities for the development of AI applications. Research within this theme focuses on strengthening data awareness, recognizing and interpreting bias in AI, investigating the societal consequences of this technology, and training experts who understand technology in relation to humans.
