Sectorplans
Sectorplans are joint agreements between universities to strengthen research and education. Since 2022, the government has been investing extra in four science domains, including the social sciences and humanities (SSH).
With help of the sectorplans:
- 1,200 new university teachers were hired;
- SSH-faculties work together on pressing social issues;
- cooperation between disciplines is structurally supported.
Four sectorplans have been created for the SSH-domain. Each plan focuses on a specific theme, with its own goals and specific collaborations.
The SSH-sectorplans
Below, we briefly outline the rationale behind the four SSH-sectorplans. Click on each plan for a more detailed explanation and an overview of its progress.
1. Sectorplan Cross-cutting Theme
Universities are working together in the Cross-Cutting Theme sectorplan ‘Prosperity, Participation and Citizenship in a Digital World’. This plan came about with the commitment of the SSH-council and the entire field of SSH-faculties. With the sectorplan, we aim to contribute optimally to answers to fundamental questions and challenges for society. In the realisation of this plan, researchers cooperate intensively across disciplines, faculties and universities. Joanne van der Leun is the national coordinator of this SSH-wide sectorplan. You can find the plan starting on page 244 in this document.
2. Sectorplan Humanities
The sectorplan for the humanities, titled ‘Tradition in transition’, outlines the strategy for this field. You can find the full plan on page 135 of this document.

3. Sectorplan Social Sciences
Experts and leaders in the social sciences developed the sectorplan “From insight to impact” to guide research and education in this field. You can find the full plan on page 6 of this document.

4. Sectorplan Law
The Law sectorplan is included as part C of the domain overview ‘Stronger together‘ (starting on page 53).
